Enoch T. Mugford was born in Portland, Me., Jan. 14, 1829. He settled in Chicago in
1852, following the trade of carpenter and joiner. Settled in Oceana County in 1854,
first locating at Pentwater, where he followed the occupations of fishing and
lumbering. In 1858 he removed to Hart township, where he has since resided. March 1,
1851, he married Martha Jane Nutter, who was born in Wolfsboro, N.H., Sept., 1828.
She came to Oceana County with her husband, and with him has endured the trials and
enjoyed the pleasures of pioneer life. Ten children were born to them, only four of
whom survive. Mr. Mugford is a mand of positive convictions and possessed of great
mental force. Had he educated himself in one of the professions in early life he
would have obtained eminence. As it is, he has always been a prominent figure in his
locality. In April, 1890, for the sixteenth time in succession he was elected
Supervisor of Hart township. He is a prominent Mason, Odd Fellow, and a member of
different farmer's organizations. Has been prominent in organizing and maintaining
the Oceana Co. Pioneer Association. He owns a small farm in Hart township, but is not
engaged in farming. He was appointed Postmaster of Hart by President Cleveland, which
office he held until recently. He is still in the enjoyment of health and has the
promise of many years of usefulness.
